Dealing with the Layers dialog box

Figure 3-1 shows the Layers dialog box with its two sample layers active. The sample layers are created in Chapter 4.

To adjust the brightness of an image, in most programs, you simply change the overall brightness of an image. In Photoshop, this adjustment can be made through the Levels tool, which enables you to adjust the brightness, contrast, and color of an image as a single adjustment.

The Layers dialog box, as shown in Figure 3-1, offers many tools for dealing with layers. The following list contains a brief introduction to most of these tools:

**Layer palette:** Enables you to access and manage layers. See the "Picking and Unpicking Layers" sidebar earlier in this chapter.

**Duplicate:** Duplicates a layer but does not enable you to edit it. You can use it to copy a layer so that you can use another layer or combine two layers.

**Reveal All:** Helps you to understand the hierarchy of your layers by showing all layers within the layer hierarchy.

**Zoom:** When you zoom in or out, Photoshop automatically adjusts the proportion of the layer in relation to the image. This tool enables you to change the size of a layer, change the layer's position within the image, or change the proportion of a layer relative to the image.

**Lock:** Enables you to lock a layer so that you can't accidentally change it.

**Erase:** Deletes the selected layer.

**Create a New Layer:** Creates a new layer that is visible in the Layers palette.

**Merge Visible:** Merges all the layers below the selected layer into a new layer.

While Photoshop Elements is an almost completely free version of Photoshop, it is not free in the way Photoshop is free. The image editing software is not all there is to Photoshop Elements. Any image editing software has icons, menus and toolbars. Some of these are common to all photo-editing software and some unique to Photoshop Elements. You can learn the functions of Photoshop Elements icons by reading the following descriptions. If you have downloaded and installed Photoshop Elements, you can refer to this user manual as well as the Photoshop Elements main window.

1. Tools and Utilities

The Photoshop Elements main toolbar has the most commonly used functions in a basic photo editor. Edit Tools lets you carry out most basic edits to your photo and Image Toolbar gives you access to the editing tools such as cropping, resizing, colorizing, color correction, enhancing and sharpening.

The Layers toolbar contains the tools to create and manipulate layers for any image. The tools are divided into two groups, Frame and Object tools.

Frame tools includes the most commonly used commands such as perspective, flip left-right or top-bottom, frame, use as background, image resize, image rotation and perspective; Object tools are commands to crop and rotate an object within an image.

The Expert panels and F-Panel tools let you control specific functions in Photoshop Elements. The panels are floating on top of the original image and they contain edit tools in Photoshop Elements’ editing menu. The f-panel includes tools to copy, delete, combine and the like.

File Icon:

The standard file icon for the programs in your computer system. It looks like this:

Save icon:

The Save icon is used to save a new version of the original image. If a file already exists in the same location, the Save icon will be replaced by a warning icon.

Recent icon:

The Recent icon is used to store the last used image or the original image.
