Photoshop can open most file formats, including Photoshop, TIFF, EPS, JPG, and more. It can read, write, and edit nearly any type of raster image. It can also do some of the same things as Paint Shop Pro and other graphics programs.

The typical Photoshop interface involves a number of layers. Each layer is a collection of bits. You can combine multiple layers, and some layers can have more than one color in the same layer. You can cut and paste areas of an image and then repaint them in a new location. And you can convert a layer into a different type of layer, like an alpha (or smart or shadow) layer, to apply special effects to the layer. You can even apply multiple layers to produce the final result.

The Size tool controls the point size of the pixels in an image. In old Mac programs, you can use the tool to set the font size, but Photoshop's point-size setting controls the pixels per inch. Check out Book III, Chapter 2 for more on this tool.

The Tools panel contains 11 color, text, and line-drawing tools that are used to create special effects in a variety of ways. The selection tools create and modify the original selection area for layers. The Move tool performs very well when it comes to moving text and images around a page. The Free Transform tool enables you to distort both text and images. By going to the Lens Correction, you can correct lens distortion and then see an example of the resulting image.

Figure 2-1 shows a Photoshop document with a few layers on it.

Many different types of layers are displayed in the Layers palette. You can open a number of types of layers in the program, including patterns, grids, paths, and text. You can even turn a path into a group of brush or brush strokes.

When you load an image into Photoshop, you create a number of layers. Each layer contains a set of pixels, as explained in the "Treat your image as a document" section earlier in this chapter. You can use one or more layers to work on an image, adding special effects to portions of the image while leaving others unchanged. You can create a final image by combining several layers into a single layer with a mask.

Basic editing tasks like cropping, resizing and lightening/darkening of images can be done without Photoshop Elements. Photoshop has several buttons for these tasks, and you can click them or type in the appropriate values.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a set of filters and tools that enable you to catalog, edit, store, and arrange your digital images. It includes a useful collection of web-optimized tools that are designed to help you edit, store, organize, find, and share your images.

It has worked wonders for me and a whole lot of other photographers.

Adobe Photoshop Express

Adobe Photoshop Express is a free web-based service that enables you to edit, print, and send your photos directly from a web browser.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for iPad

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for iPad is one of the most powerful image editing apps for iOS. It’s an Apple-only title, though, which means it doesn’t work on Android, or Windows, or Linux.

Adobe Photoshop Touch

Adobe Photoshop Touch is a mobile edition of the professional Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop Express for iPad

Adobe Photoshop Express for iPad is a free web-based service that enables you to edit, print, and send your photos directly from a web browser.

Like Photoshop, it’s a Windows-only app that costs $699.99 up to $999.99.

The Clone Brush is similar to a Clone Stamp, but also allows for repeated areas of the image to be copied.
Gradient Fill lets you fill an image or selected area with a gradient. This is the most frequently used tool in Photoshop for creating logos and backgrounds.
The Gradient Tool lets you create and modify gradients. There are multiple ways to create gradients, such as creating a linear gradient with two colors, or creating a Radial Gradient using a gradient type. Once created, you can modify the length and position of the gradient.
The Pen Tool allows you to draw lines or shapes. This tool is used for most editing.
The Spot Healing Brush is very similar to the Clone Stamp, but uses a slightly different algorithm. It can also work with different types of pixels (e.g. an outline of a shape, an adjustment layer, a gradient, or a texture).
The Smudge Tool lets you create pixel-by-pixel edits to an image. This tool is primarily used to remove unwanted pixels or other artifacts.
The Paint Bucket fills selected areas of an image with a color. The Paint Bucket Tool is the most useful tool for filling an image with different colors. For more complex or custom colors, the Color Picker tool can be used.
Photoshop also comes with a variety of special effects. These effects are grouped into several categories:

The Transform Panel houses several tools for manipulating an image. This is the most powerful tool for editing your image.
The Crop Tool lets you crop an image to a specific area. You can also draw a box around your image and have it crop based on the area inside the box.
The Resize tool allows you to resize the overall size of an image.
The Move Tool lets you position an image in different locations on the screen. It also allows you to move an image from one place in the image editor to another.
The Free Transform allows you to rotate, skew, zoom, and shift the overall aspect ratio of an image.
The Warp tool lets you distort an image. You can distort the entire image or select an area to distort.
The Skew tool lets you distort an image horizontally or vertically. You can also rotate an image.
The 3D Paint tool allows you to create 3D objects, cubes, and boxes.
The 3D Tool, Pen, and Pencil tools allow you to create a 3D model of an image, image layer, text, or a shape

I love my phone, but I hate the “dumb” apps they have in stores and on the internet. I’m not blind to the fact that those apps have cost Google and Apple (and the developers who created them) a lot of money, and made their respective ecosystems more complicated. I hate the thought of another “dumb” app beating out something that is much more efficient. I hate the “dumb” apps existing.

I hate them. I hate the fact that most app developers don’t understand how to make a “smart” app that makes the experience better and saves users money. Every new app seems to be worse than the last, every new app seems to be dumb. I’m not alone.

If a competent developer thinks that a smart app will make the user’s life easier, they often think that a dumb app will do the same thing. This is a common thought amongst designers and developers of “smart” apps. You can send text messages to a big group of people when you’re on the go, and every app on the market has some means of accomplishing this — none are as efficient or nice as the Slack app. You can keep people up-to-date when they’re working on the same project; here again, there are apps for that, and they aren’t as efficient or cool as the Atlassian product.

Dumb apps are more popular, but smart apps are more efficient and make the user’s life better. Here are a few:

Gmail

If you use Google’s mail service, you’ll know that it’s a “dumb” app. It’s a collection of links that people can follow to get their email. Everything is somewhat limited and the UI is not as efficient as it could be. Of course, you can point a browser to your GMail address, but that’s not what the mail service was designed to do.

Apple’s iMessage is built on top of the SMS service that helps you send and receive emails on your iPhone. It’s a much more efficient way of sending emails. There are also multiple versions of iMessage. The one in iOS9 is still not very useful because of the lack of reply and contact options.
